Woman arrested after
crash with fire truck
A Bellingham woman was arrested on
suspicion of driving while intoxicated
Thursday night after her car collided
with a city fire truck.
Sharon Casey of 405 Fieldston Road,
No. 1, was treated and released from St.
Joseph Hospital South Campus. Her age
was unavailable.
Bellingham Police Sgt. Jim Geddes
said Casey was going the wrong way on a
one-way street when the crash occurred.
The fire truck was northbound on Gi-
rard, returning from a call, and Casey's
1988 Honda was westbound on D when
the truck struck her car nearly broadside.
Paramedic Floyd Roorda, who was
driving the truck, said Casey didn't stop
after the crash.
"I'm just glad we weren't two seconds
later, because we would have plastered
her right in the door," Roorda said.
"The fact that she drove away was just
overload. I just couldn't believe it.
"It seems strange to get in a wreck
and then chase the patient ... There's
something wrong with this picture."
He put damage to the truck at up to
$2,000. Casey's car was destroyed.
Man `satisfactory'
after being hit by car
A 37-year-old Bellingham man was in
satisfactory condition today after being
hit by a car as he walked along Boule-
vard Thursday shortly before midnight.
The car's driver, Sean A. Harcharek, ,
22, of 2221 Wilson Ave., was booked into
Whatcom County Jail on suspicion of ve-
hicular assault.
The man suffered head and leg inju-
ries, said acting Bellingham, Police Lt.
Tom Corzine.
He was walking south on the shoulder
near Wharf Street when a southbound
car apparently crossed the fog line and
struck him, Corzine said.
He was taken to St. Joseph Hospital
South Campus; a spokeswoman said he
was in satisfactory condition today.
Alcohol may have been a factor in the
accident, Corzine said.
Point Roberts park levy
votes recounted today
Primary election results are too close
to tell whether enough Point Roberts
voters backed a levy to run their parks,
county Auditor Shirley Forslof said.
A recount was scheduled at 2 p.m.
today in the Auditor's Office.
A review by the Whatcom County
Canvassing Board showed voters were
split 95 in favor to 54 opposed, creating a
59.7 percent "yes" vote. The $20,000 levy
needs 60 percent "yes" to pass.
The money is used to run ballfields on
Benson Road and Point Roberts Com-
munity Center on Gulf Road. The an-
nual levy has failed only once in its near-
ly 30 years.
