Cheers also to the generous Whatcom County residents who donated $180,000 to families struck by the tragedy. Shame on Point Roberts Fire District Commissioner candidate Jesse Lofquist for blaming his own mistake on "bureaucracy" and accusing Whateom County Auditor Shirley Forslof of losing "the voice of the people" for simply following state law. Lofquist filled out a form incorrectly, checking the yvrgng box.for the seat he was running for. To further complicate matters, he filed aftef the deadline and ran as a write-in candidate, meaning his name was not printed on the ballot. That meant that people who wanted to vote for him and incumbent Don Franz, another incumbent, had to vote for two people in the same race; one- write- in and one by checking_ a box. That made it unclear they were voting foriwo people in the same race. State law mandates those ballots be disqualified. "Everyone knew we were running as a team and not against each other," Lofquist said. The Auditor's Office must file candidate applications as they are submitted. Lofquist should admit his error and apologize to Forslof. above public bristling nedys two showed up in the same era. The of of Adamses and the Harrison began, the site trend. That inter- national legal principle is one vital oasis of humanity, one fragile guaran- tee of mercy, mankind has struggled to preserve when peace gives way to war. Yet in Afghanistan, the right of sur- render appears to be in serious peril — a development that will test the U.S. commitment to enforcing humanitari- an standards of behavior. Recent days have. brought several troubling, reports. Reuters. quoted a commander saying his unit had cap- tared and executed 160 Taliban Sol- diers, mowing them down with ma- chine gun fire. Other accounts suggested that the bloody revolt of the Taliban prisoners :held at the Qala Janghi fortress — a re- volt whose brutal suppression result- ed in the deaths of hundreds of prison- ers of whose hands were tied Behind their baeks — may have come because the captives feared they faced summary execution. The New York Times, meanwhile, described a convoy of trucks carrying 800 mistreated Taliban soldiers to an uncertain fate at.the hands of North- ern Alliance captors who, easily forgive former foes if they are fellow Afghans but who despise foreigners fighting on Afghanistan soil. Roberts Fire Distinct No. 5, 6 year term, specifically the reported totals for invalid write-ins for Richard Lloyd. To accomplish this I asked Kim Herrenkohl and Nina Denson of the Auditor's office to assist and witness the opening of the Write-in and Duplication Log case. Together the three of us assembled all of the tally sheets and verified the totals and found that the totals submitted for the final canvass of the election omitted one tally sheet with 29 additional "valid" votes for Richard Lloyd and 2 additional "valid" votes for Jesse H. Lofquist. This means that the totals of the November 6, 2001 General Election pertaining to the Pt. Roberts Fire Distinct No. 5, 6 year term are incorrect. I recommend that we ask that the certified totals be corrected.
