Update on Racial Equity Meeting with Boards/Commissions
Steve Bennett and Leah Wainman, PHAB
Action Item 0 Discussion FYI - Only
Last year the Whatcom County Health Board passed Resolution 2020-054 declaring racism as a public health crisis.
With the passing of the resolution the Health Board committed to "promoting policies and practices that reflect a
conscious effort to ensure racial equity, equity of access and service and further to ensure the equitable treatment of
all people, regardless of race or ethnicity." And as an advisory board to the Health Department and the Health
Board, it is important for the Public Health Advisory Board (PHAB) to also work to examine and reflect on our board
composition, culture, policies, and procedures, ensuring we too are equitable and actively anti -racist.
As part of this continued examination and in an attempt to understand the efforts of all Health Department boards and
committees, the PHAB Racial Equity Sub -Committee convened representatives and staff facilitators from the Health
Department's various boards and committees. The meeting, held on October 27, gave participants time to share
current practices and discuss opportunities to advance racial equity through increased diversity, community
engagement, and use of racial equity tools.
EQUITY CONSIDERATIONS
(include data or information about how topic impacts or could impact equity,
including racial equity)
The PHAB Racial Equity Sub -Committee is working directly on ways to advance racial equity through changes in
policies and practices within PHAB, and the Health Department. We hope to advance this work through continued
connections with representatives from the other Health Department boards and commissions.
