MEMO TO: Pete Griffin, Election Supervisor

FROM: Bruce Disend, City Attorney cZ>
SUBJECT: Pornography Initiative
The City of Bellingham had intended to waive verification of the
signatures on the petition(s) submitted in support of Initiative 1-C, the
pornography initiative. However, we have been contacted by the attorney
representing the proponents, and they request that the signatures be
verified. This request is apparently based upon a conversation with
Shirley Forsloff. They are concerned that not validating the signatures
may make the initiative subject to legal challenge.
The Superior Court has ordered that the signatures be verified by today,
September 23rd. Please take whatever steps are necessary to validate the
signatures so that we may comply with the Court's order. Sorry for the
unanticipated inconvenience.
In addition, please see that the ballot title, which was previously
submitted, is placed on the November 8, 1988, ballot. (A copy is
attached for your convenience.)
Thank you for your assistance in this matter.
