6 ORDINANCE AMENDING WHATCOM COUNTY CODE SECTION 10.04.095 TO
7 ESTABLISH 20 MPH SCHOOL SPEED ZONES ON BENNETT DRIVE AND ALDERWOOD
8 AVENUE FOR ALDERWOOD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

11 WHEREAS, the Whatcom County Council is authorized under RCW 46.61.440 to
12 establish school speed zones on certain County Roads; and
13
14 WHEREAS, Whatcom County Public Works was contacted by the Bellingham School
15 District requesting low cost improvements to the Alderwood Elementary School area; and
16
17 WHEREAS, the Bellingham School District has expressed support for the
18 establishment of these School Speed Zones; and
19
20 WHEREAS, the Sheriff's Office Traffic Sergeant has expressed support for the
21 establishment of these School Speed Zones; and
22
23 WHEREAS, the Whatcom County Bicycle/Pedestrian Advisory Committee has
24 expressed support for the establishment of these School Speed Zones; and
25
26 WHEREAS, the County Engineer has determined that two new 20 MPH school speed
27 zones should be established; and
28
29 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED by the Whatcom County Council that a 20
30 MPH, when children are present, school speed zone be established as follows:

32 Bennett Drive from 300 feet north of Alderwood Avenue to 300 feet south of
33 Alderwood Avenue in Section 14, Township 38 North, Range 2 East, W.M.

35 Alderwood Avenue from Bennett Drive to Hollywood Avenue in Section 14,
36 Township 38 North, Range 2 East, W.M.

38 BE IT FURTHER ORDAINED, by the Whatcom County Council that the following be
39 added to Whatcom County Code Section 10.04.095:

41 Alderwood Elementary School

43 Bennett Drive from 300 feet north of Alderwood Avenue to 300 feet south of
44 Alderwood Avenue, Section 14, Township 38 North, Range 2 East, W.M.

46 Alderwood Avenue from Bennett Drive to Hollywood Avenue, Section 14,

BE IT FURTHER ORDAINED, that the County Engineer is hereby directed to install
the appropriate signs and the Whatcom County Sheriff and Washington State Patrol be
notified by a copy of this ordinance.
