ORDINANCE NO. 2022-030
REMOVING A SCHOOL SPEED ZONE ON HANNEGAN ROAD
WHEREAS, the Whatcom County Council is authorized under RCW 46.61.440 to
establish school speed zones on certain County Roads; and
WHEREAS, the school zone and speed limit are currently established on Hannegan
Road and posted as "35 miles per hour, when children are present"; and
WHEREAS, the Meridian School District has notified the County Engineer that no
children walk or bike to school in this zone; and
WHEREAS, the Meridian School District has determined that there is no safe
walk/bike routes for students living within the normal one mile radius walk/bike zone as
established by the Safe Routes to Schools program; and
WHEREAS, the Meridian School District offers bussing to all students under the Safe
Routes to Schools program; and
WHEREAS, the Meridian School District has requested that the school speed zone on
Hannegan Road from 500 feet north of Ten Mile Road to E. Hemmi Road be removed; and
WHEREAS, the Sheriff's Office Traffic Sergeant has express support for the removal
of this School Speed Zone; and
WHEREAS, the County Engineer has agreed to remove this school speed zone; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED by the Whatcom County Council that the
school speed zone on Hannegan Road from 500 feet north of Ten Mile Road to E. Hemmi
Road in Sections 16 and 17, Township 39 North, Range 3 East, W.M., be removed; and
BE IT FURTHER ORDAINED, by the Whatcom County Council that Whatcom
County Code Section 10,04,095 is amended as follows:

BE IT FURTHER ORDAINED, that the County Engineer is hereby directed to
remove the appropriate signs and the Whatcom County Sheriff and Washington State Patrol
be notified by a copy of this ordinance.
ADOPTED this 12th day of April 2022.
