RESOLUTION REGARDING HEALTH PROTECTION FOR IMMIGRANT FAMILIES 35 (AB2018-312A) 36 37 Brenner reported for the Public Works and Health Committee and moved to approve 38 the resolution. 39 40 Councilmembers discussed the reason for the resolution; the distinction between 41 undocumented residents and legal residents who don't have identification and can't prove 42 identity; mental health concerns and social services versus communicable disease concerns; 43 convening a workgroup to support members of the community in the long-term who are 44 afraid of deportation; incentives for legal residents to not seek immunizations and other 45 services; political issues versus concerns about the spread of communicable diseases; 46 whether programs will serve people who are in the country illegally; and using taxpayer 47 dollars to support programs for people who are in the country legally versus illegally. 48 49 Regina Delahunt, Health Department Director, answered questions. 50 51 Rachel Lucy, Public Health Advisory Board Chair, gave a report and answered 52 questions. 53 Regular County Council Meeting, 12/4/2018, Page 8 The motion carried by the following vote: Ayes: Brenner, Browne, Buchanan, Donovan, Frazey, and Sidhu (6) Nays: Byrd (1) Browne submitted a draft letter (on file) of support from the Council to the Department of Homeland Security to respond to the federal government comment period to support continuation of providing health benefits to everyone, regardless of legal immigration status. Buchanan moved to send the substitute draft letter. The motion was seconded. Councilmembers and staff discussed proving eligibility and federal requirements for approving or denying services.
