ROLL CALL Present: Carl Weimer, Satpal Sidhu and Todd Donovan Absent: None Also Present: Barbara Brenner, Barry Buchanan SPECIAL PRESENTATIONS 1. WASHINGTON STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION REPORT ON THE NATURAL RESOURCES FORESTRY PROGRAM (AB2017 -068) Drew Betz, Washington State University Extension Office Director, introduced Kevin Zobrist and Michael Wallace. Kevin Zobrist, Washington State University Extension, submitted and read from handouts and a presentation (on file). He works with small forest landowners of five to 100 acres. He described various programs, including: • Forest stewardship plan classes to help people create their forest plans • A recent timber sale symposium to educate landowners on how to conduct a timber sale • Summer tree farm tours He answered questions on the best structure for a forest sale contract, the size of the consultant directory, a typical number of bidders, whether landowners can educate themselves to do their own logging, the trend of exporting logs out of the Pacific Northwest due to a loss of infrastructure for processing, concerns about forest conversion, the demand of different wood species, designated open space /forest land, trends in pulp and paper processing, uses for cottonwood, urban forestry, and the remaining existing mills. Michael Wallace, Washington State University, continued the presentation on involving 4H kids and school children in forestry presentations. 2. WASHINGTON STATE DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND WILDLIFE BRIEFING ON PROPOSED NEW HYDRAULIC PROJECT APPROVAL (HPA) LEGISLATION (AB2017 -112) This item is withdrawn from the agenda.
