HomeMy WebLinkAboutNatural Resources April 28 20151 WHATCOM COUNTY COUNCIL 2 Natural Resources Committee 3 4 April 28, 2015 5 6 CALL TO ORDER 7 8 Committee Chair Barry Buchanan called the meeting to order at 9:30 a.m. in the 9 Council Chambers, 311 Grand Avenue, Bellingham, Washington. 10 11 12 ROLL CALL 13 14 Present: Barry Buchanan, Carl Weimer, Satpal Sidhu 15 Absent: None 16 Also Present: Barbara Brenner, Pete Kremen and Rud Browne 17 18 19 SPECIAL PRESENTATION 20 21 1. PRESENTATION BY WHATCOM COUNTY DAIRY AMBASSADOR JANA 22 PLAGERMAN: 'SOUR YOUTH, OUR FUTURE OF DAIRY IN WHATCOM COUNTY" 23 (AB2015 -154) 24 25 Debbie Vanderveen submitted information (on file) and introduced Jana Plagerman. 26 27 Jana Plagerman submitted handouts (on file) and spoke about her experiences 28 growing up on a dairy farm, working in the dairy industry, and educating the public about 29 how dairy farms work. 30 31 Brenner stated she would like to invite a dairy ambassador to participate on an 32 advisory committee when the Council is working on agricultural issues. 33 34 Weimer stated he encourages Ms. Plagerman to continue her community outreach 35 and education. 36 37 Sidhu stated the dairy industry in Whatcom County is special and thanked Ms. 38 Plagerman. 39 40 The committee discussed the size of the industry in Whatcom County, the reasons 41 for the rise and fall of the historic total number cows, causes that affect milk prices, whether 42 dairy farmers are moving to Eastern Washington, the transition from Holstein cows to 43 Jersey cows, the trend toward organic and non - genetically engineered dairy products, global 44 demand for dairy products, the powder milk processing plant in Lynden, whether dairies in 45 California will relocate due to drought conditions, and water rules for the dairy industry. 46 47 48 COMMITTEE DISCUSSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS TO COUNCIL 49 50 1.
