HomeMy WebLinkAboutLaw and Justice Committee February 21 1984LAW AND JUSTICE COMMITTEE MINUTES -- FEBRUARY 21, 1984 The Law and Justice Committee was called to order at 3:07 p.m. by Acting- chair, Don Hansey with member Hawley present. Johnson was excused for the month of February at the January 19, 1984 Council meeting. Also present were Ruby White, Doddie Honrud.and.Mary Henry of the Humane Society; Donovan Kehrer, Building and Codes; Deane Sandell, Sheriff's Department; and Larry Mount, Sheriff's Department, and Councilmember Craig Cole. PT. ROBERTS ANIMAL CONTROL A discussion was held regarding an animal control issue at Point Roberts with Ruby White, Doddie Honrud, Mary Henry, Deane Sandell, Larry Mount and Councilmember Cole. HAWLEY MOVED THAT THE LAW AND JUSTICE COMMITTEE WRITE A LETTER OF APOLOGY TO LAURA WHITE AND THE COM- MUNITY STATE BANK EXPRESSING THEIR APOLOGY ON BEHALF OF WHATCOM COUNTY FOR THE INCIDENT AND WILL DO ALL IN THEIR POWER TO SEE THAT THIS TYPE OF INCIDENT DOES NOT HAPPEN AGAIN. Motion carried unanimously. PUBLIC DEFENSE ADVISORY COMMITTEE Hansey asked Councilmember Cole, as one of the pro- ponents of AN ORDINANCE AMENDING ORDINANCE NO. 82 -22, AN ORDINANCE TO ESTABLISH A WHATCOM COUNTY PUBLIC DEFENDER DISTRICT AND TO ESTABLISH THE OFFICE OF PUBLIC DEFENDER AND THE PUBLIC DEFENSE ADVISORY COMMITTEE, to explain the ra- tionale behind the amendment to extend the term of an ap- pointee from the Whatcom County Bar Association and one non - lawyer appointee to a four -year term instead of a one year term. Cole explained that all appointments to other boards are for four -year terms and to keep continuity, it was decided by the proponents to make this a four -year term. It was the consensus of the committee to make this' appointment a two -year term. HAWLEY MOVED TO AMEND PAGE 2,' LINE 26J, AFTER THE WORDS "SHALL BE" AMENDED t0 _ READ "TWO YEARS" INSTEAD OF FOUR YEARS. Motion carried. HAWLEY MOVED TO RECOMMEND "DO PASS" TO THE COUNCIL OF THE ORDINANCE AS AMENDED. Motion carried. Meeting adjourned at 3:56 p.m.
