HomeMy WebLinkAboutPublic Services Committee February 5 1985WHATCOM COUNTY COUNCIL PUBLIC SERVICES COMMITTEE The Public Services Committee was called to order on Tuesday, February 5, 1985, at 1:00 p.m. by Chairperson Hawley. Also in attendance were Don Hansey, Committee member; Dr. Philip Jones, Health Department; Bob Jurica, Engineering Department, and Andy Fernando, Bellingham Herald. REORGANIZATION OF COMMITTEE HANSEY MOVED TO POSTPONE THE REORGANIZATION OF THE COMMITTEE UNTIL THE NEXT COMMITTEE MEETING ON FEBRUARY 19, 1985. The motion carried. DISCUSSION REGARDING A PROPOSED LANDFILL TO BE LOCATED NEAR THE INTERNATIONAL BORDER Chairperson Hawley provided background information on the resolution expressing opposition to the proposed landfill to be located on the international border, called the "Border- Langley" landfill site. Dr. Jones, Health Department, briefed the Committee on a meeting to be held on Thursday, February 7, 1985, at 1:30 p.m. in Al Swift's office in the Federal Building regarding this issue. The following typographical errors in the resolution were requested to be changed as noted below: page 1, line 13 - should read "District Health Officer" page 2, line 19 - should read "Chairman of the Whatcom County Council page 2, references to the project manager and Minister of the Environment of British Columbia should also include the Premier of British Columbia. HANSEY MOVED THAT THE CORRECTED COPY OF THE RESOLUTION BE FORWARDED TO THE COUNCIL FOR INTRODUCTION AT THE FEBRUARY 7TH MEETING. The motion carried. Public Services Committee Minutes - February 5, 1985 Page 2 ORDINANCE - PLACING STOP SIGNS AT INTERSECTION OF NORTH PASS ROAD AND MINAKER ROAD Bob Jurica, Engineering Department, provided background information on this ordinance. HANSEY MOVED TO RECOMMEND APPROVAL TO THE FULL COUNCIL OF THE ORDINANCE REGARDING THE MATTER OF PLACING STOP SIGNS AT THE INTERSECTION OF NORTH PASS ROAD AND MINAKER ROAD, SUBJECT TO THE OUTCOME OF THE PUBLIC HEARING ON FEBRUARY 7, 1985. The motion carried. RESOLUTION AMENDING RESOLUTION 85 -2. VETERANS RELIEF FUND Chairperson Hawley provided background information on this ordinance. HANSEY MOVED TO RECOMMEND APPROVAL TO THE FULL COUNCIL OF THE RESOLUTION AMENDING RESOLUTION 85 -2 REQUIRING A $5,000 BOND FOR THE COMMANDANT, COMMANDER, ADJUTANT, QUARTERMASTER OR SERVICE OFFICER OF SERVICE ORGANIZATION IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE VETERANS RELIEF FUND. The motion carried. OTHER BUSINESS Executive Van Zanten .reported that she had corresponded with the project manager of the Lower ?Mainland Refuse Project, and that Bill Trimm, Planning Director, was monitoring the situation regarding the proposed landfill.
