PUBLIC SERVICES COMMITTEE
August 21, 1986
The meeting was called to order by Chairman Johnson at 5:30
p.m. with Burton present. Hawley joined the meeting at 5:40 p.m.
Also present were Jan Leonardo of Emergency Services and Sergeant
Roger Furr of the Washington State Patrol.
RESOLUTION IN THE MATTER OF TRANSPORTATION OF HAZARDOUS WASTE
Johnson briefly discussed the proposed resolution, which
would ask that County officials be notified when hazardous waste
is transported in Whatcom County.
Jan Leonardo and Sergeant Furr discussed the issues of
hazardous materials and hazardous waste transportation and
control in Whatcom County. The Committee was told that no state
legislation currently exists restricting the movement of
hazardous waste in Washington State or requiring carriers to
notify government officials, and that the amount of hazardous
waste being transported is so great that a notification
requirement would be impractical.
The Committee decided to hold the resolution while Johnson
participated in a committee being formed by Emergency Services to
formulate a County -wide hazardous material policy.
The meeting was adjourned at 6 :15 p.m.
