COMMITTEE OF THE WHOLE
July 9, 1987
The meeting was called to order at 7:03 p.m. by Council
Chair Burton with Hansey, Hawley, Muenscher and Warner present.
REPORT FROM HEALTH DEPARTMENT ON DISPOSAL OF SNOHOMISH COUNT
SLUDGE IN WHAICQM COUNTY
The Committee discussed the practice of sludge disposal in
Whatcom County and the potential hazards of this practice with
Phillip Jones and Bert Brainard of the Health Department; Craig
MacConnell, Agriculture /Cooperative Extension Service; Tom
Thetford, City of Everett; and Brett Betts, EPA. Dr. Jones
stated that the Health Department would investigate the issue
further.
SOLID WASTE PROBLEM
The direction the County should take in dealing with its
waste disposal problem was discussed.
WARNER MOVED TO RECOMMEND THAT THE COUNCIL REAFFIRM TO THE
EXECUTIVE ITS COMMITMENT TO HAVING PRIVATE INDUSTRY SOLVE THE
SOLID WASTE PROBLEM BY SITING AND OPERATING A LANDFILL.
The motion failed 2 -2, with Muenscher and Warner voting yes
and Burton and Hawley voting no. Hansey left the meeting prior
to the motion.
The meeting was adjourned at 10 :00 p.m.
