PUBLIC SERVICES COMMITTEE
March 3, 1988
The meeting was called to order at 6 :10 p.m. by Committee
Chair Johnson with all Committee members present. Also present
were Ed Henken, County Engineer; and Craig Himes, Robert Bumford,
and several other West Pole Road residents.
PETITION FOR REDUCTION OF SPEED LIMIT ON.WEST_POLE ROAD., AND
RESIDENTS' CONCERNS REGARDINQ RECONSTRUCTION TROJECT ON WEST POLE
ROAD
Craig Himes and Robert Bumford spoke to the Committee about
the concerns of West Pole Road residents about the 50 m.p.h.
speed limit on their portion of the road, and about the scope of
the reconstruction project on that road. They stated that their
end of the road differed from the rest, in that it primarily
served the needs of the local residents. They expressed concern
for the safety of citizens who live along the road, their
children, and the migrant workers who live in the area on a
seasonal basis. One resident stated that she had done her own
traffic count on the traffic in front of her house, and had come
up with a figure of 400 cars a day as opposed to the Engineer's
estimate of 1200 a day on the more- traveled section of the road.
The residents also questioned the scope of the project, including
the amount of their property which would be taken. They said
they believed many other county roads were more in need of work
than the West Pole Road, and that the project had only been
undertaken because the money was available from the State.
The Committee requested the Engineer to do another traffic
count, and to present his recommendations on the petition to
reduce the speed limit to the Committee at its first meeting in
April.
