HomeMy WebLinkAboutFinance January 17 1989WHATCOM COUNTY COUNCIL FINANCE COMMITTEE January 17, 1989 The meeting was called to order at 3 :00 p.m. by Committee Chairman Dan Warner with members Emily Jackson and Mary Vanderpol present. Also present were Council member Don Hansey, Barbara Cory, Treasurer; Shirley Forslof, Auditor; Bob Carmichael, Prosecutor's office; Tom Sutberry, Budget Director, and Bonnie Strode, Water District 10. Election of Officers Jackson moved that Warner continue to be Chairman of this committee. Vanderpol seconded. Warner accepted. Resolution to sell property acquired by County on tax foreclosure (request number 4) Strode stated that the County is no longer collecting delinquent service charges on the sale of property acquired on tax foreclosure. On the current sale this amounted to $10,000 in lost revenue to the water district. Carmichael stated that the way the law is written the County only has the right to collect assessment and not services charges or liens. The only recourse the water districts have on delinquent service charges is to foreclose and this Is not financially feasible. Warner was very sympathetic to the water district as these lines must be kept up and serviced but had to acknowledge the way the law is written. Warner moved to recommend approval of the resolution to sell property without adding water district service charges. Vanderpol seconded. Finance, 1/17/89, Page 2 Lo a �- �- Cory outlined a request from Habitat International for a donation of land for their project of constructing a home with volunteer labor for a family in need. Cory was asked to check the legality of this act and also check on the possibility of leasing the land for a long term period. Since this has been going on in Yakima, it was suggested that they be called to see if the County had donated land In that area. Forslof brought statistics concerning the cost of different elections (Federal - $15,000, State - $64,000, County - $13,000). She suggested everyone lobby to see that our state pays its share of elections.
