HomeMy WebLinkAboutPublic Services September 28 1993WHATCOM COUNTY COUNCIL PUBLIC SERVICES AND SOLID WASTE COMMITTEE September 28, 1993 The meeting was called to order at 5:45 p.m. in the Council Chambers, 1000 North Forest Street, by Committee Chairman Bob Imhof. Also Present: Absent: Barbara Brenner None Dennis Vander Yacht 1. ORDINANCE REGARDING THE MATTER OF PLACING A WEIGHT LIMIT ON H STREET BRIDGE NO. 41 AND PLACING DETOUR SIGNS AT JACKMAN ROAD & AXLING ROAD (AB93 -363) Nasser Mansour, Engineering Division of the Public Works Department, explained the need for the weight limit and detour signs. Imhof asked for clarification. Brenner commented. BRENNER MOVED TO ACCEPT ITEM NUMBER 1 AND RECOMMEND IT FOR APPROVAL BY THE COUNCIL. Motion carried unanimously. 2. ORDINANCE REGARDING THE MATTER OF PLACING A WEIGHT LIMIT ON THE NOOKSACK ROAD BRIDGE NO. 508 AND PLACING STOP SIGNS ON EACH ROADWAY APPROACH (AB93 -364) BRENNER MOVED TO SET A HEARING ON THE PLACEMENT OF THE STOP SIGNS. Motion carried unanimously. BRENNER MOVED TO RECOMMEND AMENDING THE ORDINANCE IN ORDER FOR THE WEIGHT LIMITS TO BE PLACED ON THE NOOKSACK ROAD BRIDGE WITH THE STOP SIGNS TO BE CONSIDERED LATER AS A SEPARATE ISSUE. OTHER BUSINESS Smith Road Project (AB93 -217): Brenner and Imhof asked for an update on the Smith Road construction project. Mansour said excavation should be completed this week, and if that is the case, the entire surface should be able to be completed this year. Hannegan Road project also was discussed. Mansour estimated the Smith Road should be completed by the third week of October, weather permitting. Euclid Avenue Traffic Problem (AB93 -175): John Sibold, 1622 Euclid Avenue, told the Committee of a meeting with Jeff Monsen and Sibold's concerns about Euclid Avenue. A recommendation may be coming from the County Executive soon. Sibold's belief is some kind of road closure with same bypass for emergency vehicles and school buses is the best answer. Committee members commented. He spoke of a traffic study done recently in front of his home and the high speeds of travel in the 25- mile -an -hour- zone. There was discussion.
