Council Chair Seth Fleetwood called the meeting to order at 10:35 a.m. in the
Council Chambers, 311 Grand Avenue, Bellingham, Washington.
Present: Barbara Brenner,
and Carl Weimer.
Absent: Sam Crawford.
1. PUBLIC SESSION
No one spoke.
Laurie Caskey- Schreiber, Seth Fleetwood, L. Ward Nelson
2. H1N1 (SWINE FLU) UPDATE
The following people gave a staff report:
• Regina Delahunt, Health Department Director, answered questions.
• Joni Hensley, Health Department, gave a staff report, discussed surveillance
methods and disease monitoring of the entire community, and answered
questions.
• Dr. Greg Stern, Health Department, submitted and read from a presentation
(on file), gave a staff report, discussed disease progression, and answered
questions.
• Astrid Newell, Health Department, gave a staff report, discussed the H1N1
vaccine, and answered questions.
Discussion included whether those who died had viral or bacterial pneumonia;
promoting the pneumonia vaccine; the difference between pandemic and seasonal
occurrences; differences between swine flu and the H1N1 virus; previous exposure prior to
the 1950's causing some immunity in people over 65; methods for preventing the spread of
H11\11; how they balance other influenzas with this influenza, and getting the community
immunized; distribution of the seasonal and H1N1 vaccines to the pharmacies; when the
vaccine will become available to everyone; whether anyone has exhibited an adverse
reaction to the vaccine; whether people who have been ill need to get the vaccine;
restricting the vaccine to priority groups, and; the message to the community.
3. 2010 OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES
The following people gave a staff report:
• Regina Delahunt, Health Department Director, stated they have gotten State
and federal agencies regarding the health implications of the 2010 Olympics.
Doing disease surveillance regarding 2010 Olympics.
• Joni Hensley, Health Department, gave a staff report and discussed disease
surveillance plans for the Olympics and the introduction of other diseases
coming into the community from other countries.
• Marcus Deyerin, Health Department, gave a staff report and discussed public
health medical incident planning.
Discussion included whether they have coordinated to use the Blaine High School
auditorium.
