CALL TO ORDER
Committee Chair Barbara Brenner called the meeting to order at 1:30 p.m. in the
Council Chambers, 311 Grand Avenue, Bellingham, Washington.
ROLL CALL
Present: Carl Weimer, Barbara Brenner and Ken Mann.
Absent: None.
Also Present: Kathy Kershner.
COMMITTEE DISCUSSION
1. PRESENTATION BY RODD PEMBLE, SSC RECYCLING MANAGER, REGARDING
WASTE REDUCTION IDEAS (AB2010 -241) (1 :36:03 PM)
Rod Pemble, Sanitary Service Company (SSC) Recycling Manager, submitted and
read from a handout (on file) on strategic waste reduction and recycling for Whatcom
County government. Other county governments, such as Kitsap and Thurston counties,
have won awards for their recycling efforts.
Discussion included how to recycle various household, office, and business items;
what happens to plastic items that go into the recycle stream; using alternative products
that are more compostable; the County's recent recycling efforts; compostable food waste
at the jail, and; staff training.
