RESOLUTION NO. 2001 -019
TO INTERVENE IN THE MATTER OF THE GEORGIA STRAITS CROSSING
PIPELINE APPLICATION PENDING BEFORE THE UNITED STATES FEDERAL
ENERGY REGULATORY COMMISSION
WHEREAS, pursuant to the Whatcom County Home Rule Charter, the
legislative power of Whatcom County is vested in the Whatcom County
Council; and
WHEREAS, the Whatcom County Council is elected to represent the
concerns of the citizens of Whatcom County and is charged with the broad
responsibility of protecting the health, safety and general welfare of the
public; and
WHEREAS, certain environmental, land use and planning, natural
resource, and economic concerns are raised by the application of the Georgia
Straits Crossing Pipeline L.P. filed before the United States Federal Energy
Regulatory Commission to construct and operate a natural gas pipeline from
Sumas, Washington, to Vancouver Island, British Columbia, via Cherry Point
in Whatcom County.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Whatcom County Council
that the County shall petition the United States Federal Energy Regulatory
Commission to intervene as a party in the above referenced application in
order to ensure that the Commission's decision is one which best reflects the
interests of the County and promotes and protects the economic,
environmental, health, safety and general welfare interests of the citizens of
Whatcom County.
