RESOLUTION NO. 2001 -018

CONDEMNING HATE CRIMES AND MALICIOUS HARASSMENT
WHEREAS, racially motivated hate crimes are a violation of individuals' civil
rights and detrimental to the well being of communities; and
WHEREAS, recent occurrences of hate messages and attacks on people of color,
ethnic diversity, and sexual orientation are not isolated incidents, but are part of a
larger pattern of persistent bigotry and intimidation, and should be treated as
intolerable acts that threaten our communities; and
WHEREAS, communities and neighborhoods in Whatcom County have recently
been targeted by a racially intolerant white supremacist organization; and
WHEREAS, we believe incidents of hate crimes and bigotry are a threat to all
citizens in Whatcom County and should be condemned; and
WHEREAS, we believe that hate crimes, in any form, against anyone, regardless
of ethnic origin, age, sex, religion, mental or physical disability, sexual orientation, or
sexual identity, should be condemned; and
WHEREAS, the role of the Whatcom County Council is to create and maintain
public policy to promote the well -being of the community as a whole; and
WHEREAS, the Whatcom County Council assumes a leadership role in working
with other jurisdictions and governing bodies; and
WHEREAS, the Whatcom County Council encourages all agencies and
jurisdictions to adopt positions and policies opposing hate crimes and malicious
harassment.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Whatcom County Council that all
hate crimes and malicious harassment are condemned and perpetrators of such acts
are to be aggressively pursued and vigorously prosecuted to the fullest extent of the
law.
