Related County Contact #: Should the Clerk schedule a beating ?(YN N Requested Date: Resolution in support of the ongoing relationship between Whatcom County and the Lummi Nation RECOMMENDED MOTION (for final action): COUNCIL ACTION TAKEN- 2001 - 133 41112001: Atnended and approved, 5-1, McShane opposed, Crawford absent, Res. 42001 -015 ?elated File Numbers: Ordinance or Resolution Number (this item only): RE5) * ZC01- 015 Lummi Resolution.doc PROPOSED BY: Brenner, Nelson SPONSORED BY: Brenner, Nelson Dawson INTRODUCED: April 17, 200 RESOLUTION NO. 2001 -015 RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF THE ONGOING RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN WHATCOM COUNTY AND THE LUMMI NATION WHEREAS, Whatcom County and the Lummi Nation have enjoyed a relationship of mutual respect; and WHEREAS, it is in the interest of Whatcom County and the Lummi Nation to have this relationship continue; and WHEREAS, several issues have come to light that need clarification in order to continue the respectful relationship between Whatcom County and the Lummi Nation. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Whatcom County Council supports the following positions: 1. The current County Council has never taken a position regarding diminishment of the Lummi Reservation. 2. The Whatcom County Council reaffirms its commitment to the 2514 Memorandum of Understanding with the Lummi Nation which includes knowledge based decision making. 3. The Lummi Indian Tribe and Whatcom County desire to work together to address natural resources, economic development opportunities, and other issues for the benefit of all people. 4. The Whatcom County Council, through its tribal liaisons, will work to clarify its understanding of recently raised issues including public access to Portage Island, water quantity and usage on the reservation, bulkhead concerns, and tidelands questions.
