ORDINANCE NO. 87 -27 eq
AN ORDINANCE AMENDING WHATCOM COUNTY CODE
TITLE 10 TO ESTABLISH A SPEED LIMIT OF 35
MILES PER HOUR ON ALL COUNTY ROADS EXCEPT
WHERE OTHERWISE POSTED
WEREAS, the Whatcom County Council is authorized under
RCW 46.61.415 to alter maximum speed limits on all
county roads.
WHEREAS, the County Council has determined that a
county -wide speed limit be established at 35 miles per
hour except where otherwise posted; and
WHEREAS, said requirement is necessary in that the
majority of the county roads were established in the
early 1900s; and
WHEREAS, the present maximum 50 miles per hour on
county roads has been determined to be excessive for, a
number of the road's design; and
WHEREAS, 35 miles per hour, except for those roads
where higher limits, as shown on Exhibit A, may be
safely effected or where a lower speed limit is
required, is determined to be a safer speed; and
WHEREAS, the roads in Point Roberts were previously
dealt with in Ordinance No. 83 -33 and that ordinance is
not meant to be affected by this ordinance.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED that the speed limit for, all
county roads within the unincorporated areas of Whatcom County,
be established as follows:
35 miles per hour, unless otherwise posted.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER ORDAINED that Exhibit A is
incorporated by reference into this ordinance as if fully set
forth herein, and the speed limits listed in Exhibit A for the
named roads are established as the legal limits for those roads
by this ordinance.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER ORDAINED that any and all
other ordinances within the Whatcom County Code which establishes
a speed limit of 35 miles per hour or more are hereby repealed
and are no longer of any force or effect unless specifically
mentioned either, in Exhibit A or another part of this ordinance.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER ORDAINED that Ordinance No.
83 -33 shall not be affected by this ordinance and all of the
terms and conditions established in that ordinance shall remain
full force and effect.
BE IT FURTHER ORDAINED that the effective date of this
ordinance shall be July 1, 1987.
Provisions of this ordinance are hereby added to Whatcom
County Code Title 10.
