ORDINANCE AMENDING ORDINANCE 89 -96, CREATING A NEW PART -TIME MENTAL HEALTH COMMISSIONER WHEREAS, Washington State Laws- of 1989, Chapter 174, enacted allows the Superior Court judges to appoint a part -time or full -time mental health commissioner to hear the civil commitment hearings for Whatcom County; and, WHEREAS, this position would be in addition to the recently created full -time commissioner position in that scheduling the newly created commissioner's time for these mental commitments has proven unworkable; and, . WHEREAS, this position is necessary for the efficient operation of the :superior Court due to the increasing number of mental health commitments which are requiring an ever expanding amount: of time for the judges to review; and, WHEREAS, -the compensation for this part -time position is not being requested as a separately funded position but will be paid for out of funds already budgeted to the Superior Court; WHEREAS, the County Council adopted Ordinance 89 -96 on the 16th day of November, creating a part -time position of Mental Health Commissioner for a thirty -day period; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED that Ordinance 89 -96 is hereby ammended, to eliminate the thirty -day restriction and therefore creating a part -time position of Mental Health Commissioner to hear the civil commitments for Whatcom County; and BE IT FURTHER ORDAINED that the Superior Court judges shall appoixit the person to this part -time position and shall designate the duties to be performed by that person in accordance with Chapter 174 of the Washington Law of 1989. - Ordinance - 1. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 INTRODUCED BY: Warner PROPOSED BY: Sup, Ct____.
