ORDINANCE NO. 89 -16
AN ORDINANCE ESTABLISHING A COUNTY
POLICY FOR N S F CHECKS
WHEREAS, there currently is no county- wide policy for handling
NSF checks; and
WHEREAS, there are attributable administrative costs required to
process these checks; and
WHEREAS, the Administrative Finance Committee has discussed this
issue and believes it is appropriate that a uniform policy be
established,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED that the policy of Whatcom County
be as follows:
The Whatcom County Treasurer or other agents of the
County shall charge a fee of $15.00 per check for all
checks returned account closed or non - sufficient funds.
Each department will be responsible for the collection
of this fee and notifying the individual of the NSF
check.
Individuals who fail to make full restitution within
one month of date of notification or have a pattern of
writing NSF checks, will be prevented from writing
another check to the County for one ,year. A list of
those individuals will be maintained in the Treasurer's
Office, updated monthly and provided to all County
departments.
Each department will notify the Treasurer's Office of
names to be included or deleted from this list.
Each department may take further action by utilizing
the Prosecutor's Bad Check Diversion Program.
