SUMMARY STATEMENT.-
The Public Defender's Office is experiencing a caseload increase of nearly 40% over
1989. The County is obligated by law to provide adequate defense for indigents charged
with criminal acts. This ordinance will assist the County in meeting its obligations.

REVISION TO THE 1990
CURRENT EXPENSE FUND, PUBLIC
DEFENDER'S APPROPRIATION THEREIN
FOR AN ADDED DEPUTY AND RELATED EQUIPMENT
WHEREAS, the Public Defender's office is currently experiencing a caseload
increase over 1989 of nearly 40 %; and
WHEREAS, it is the constitutional obligation of the County to provide
adequate defense for indigents charged with criminal behavior;and
WHEREAS, an additional attorney for the office assists the County in
meeting the constitutional requirment;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT ORDAINED the Whatcom County Council hereby revises
the 1990 Current Expense Fund, Public Defender's budget plan therein as follows:

BE IT FURTHER ORDAINED that ordinance 89 -105 is hereby amended by adding
$26,006 in appropriation authority to the 1990 Current Expense Fund, Public
Defender's appropriation therein.
