A RESOLUTION DECLARING THAT THE WHATCOM MUSEUM OF
HISTORY AND .'ART IS FORMALLY REi OGNIijED BY TIIE COUNCIL,
OF WHATCOM AS TIIE OFFICIAL MUSE OF THE COUNTY OF
WHATCOM
WHEREAS, -in t:he past, significant support; has been given to
the Whatcom Museum of History and Art (hereafter referred to as the
Whatcom .Museum) by the government of the County of Whatcom; and
WHEREAS, -the Whatcom Museum owns and houses a. collection of
historic ar'tifac'ts and art works directly related to the County of
Whatcom and the Pacific; Northwest; and
WHEREAS, the Whatcom Museum has in its administrative and
operating staff experienced museum professionals who can and do
provide expertise in areas related to collection, cataloguing,
conservation. and use of historic artifacts, exhibit design., and
museum management; and
WHEREAS, the Whatcom Museum incoi3porates the educational
function as an intergral part of its operating objectives, thus
becoming a viable and important educational setting for the arts,
and history of the County of Whatcom and the Pacific, Northwest; and
WHEREAS, the Whatcom �,4useum provides both i.ri.--mu.seum and
in- school educational programs on art and county and regional
history and is presently performing these se,,,.-vices throughout, the
County of Whatcom; and
WHEREAS, the Whatcom Museum is a major_ information and

referral institution providing information to researchers and
scholars with special interests, and, in addition, publishes
books pertaining to the history of the, County of Whatcom and the
. gyp,,
Pacific Northwest and art catalogues relating to exhibitions dis.-
played at the museum; and

WHEREAS, the Whatcom Museum provides state, ntati.ona.l and
i intdrnational exhibitions otherwise unavailable to the residents of
the County of Whatcom; and
WHEREAS, the Whatcom Museum offers a varied selection of
performing arts, lectures and special programs throughout: the
year for the benefit and enjoyment of the people of the County of
Whatcom; and
WHEREAS, the Whatcom Museum has been recognized statewide
and nationwide as a major museum of history and art by the
Washington Commission for the Humanities, the Washington State.
Arts Commission, the Washington Art; Consortium, the Washington State Oral History Office, the Amer i cans Assoc:iat i.on of Museums,
the American Association of State and Local_ History, The American
Film Society, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the National.
Historic Publications and Records Commission;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL, OF THE COUNTY
OF WHATCOM, that because of the singular contributions to the
community by the Whatcom Museum., the Council of the Country of
Whatcom does hereby recognize the Whatcom Museum of History and
Art, as the of:fici.al. Museum of the County of Whatcom.
