HomeMy WebLinkAboutres1983-0541 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 30 31 32 DATE: October 20, 1983 INTRODUCED BY: Hansey PROPOSED BY: Hansey RESOLUTION NO. 83 -54 'A RESOLUTION OF THE WHATCOM COUNTY COUNCIL REGARDING THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A "HOME PORT BASE" FOR THE UNITED STATES NAVY AT CHERRY POINT WHEREAS, the United States Navy has decided to establish a homeport base for its carrier task force group in the Puget Sound Area, and WHEREAS, the Port of Bellingham has made a proposal to the United States Navy for the establishment of that home base at Cherry Point in Whatcom County, and WHEREAS, abundant unimproved land, including some 1,000 acres required by the U.S. Navy for the establishment of its home base operation is available at Cherry Point, and an active Whatcom County Home Builder's Association and Carpenter's Union are visibly in favor of the establishment of a U.S. Navy home base at Cherry Point, and WHEREAS, the adjacent city of Ferndale now has a substantial housing vacancy rate, allowing additional living spaces for enlisted personnel and support personnel in the area, and WHEREAS, community leaders, business people, governmental officials, and the media have expressed continuing support of the United States Navy to establish the home base operation at Cherry Point, and WHEREAS, the community as a whole must commit its full efforts and support welcoming the Navy's operation here and will work in construction, services, education, governmental capacities, , recreation and business to insure the effort will be successful; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Whatcom County Counci hereby endorses the efforts of the Port of Bellingham in investigatij the establishment of a home base for the U.S. Navy Task Force RESOLUTION - 1. November 2, 1983 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 911 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 30 31 32 Group at Cherry Point and offers its cooperation in providing whatever information is necessary to pursue this objective; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Whatcom County Council does hereby request the Port of Bellingham and any other group or organization to keep the Whatcom County Council fully informed as to its progress in pursuing the Home basing of the U.S. Navy Task Force at Cherry Point including the impacts this program may have on Whatcom County and its small towns, and assures those parties of the full cooperation of the Whatcom County Council.
