HomeMy WebLinkAboutres1983-0201 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 91 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 30 31 32 IIINTRODUCED IIBY: Van Zanten I DATE: May 5, 1983 PROPOSED BY:Hansey and Van Zanten RESOLUTION NO. 83 -20 A RESOLUTION IN OPPOSITION TO CLOSING, AND EXPRESSING CONCERN TO REDUCING OPERATING HOURS, AT THE BORDER CROSSING STATIONS OF POINT ROBERTS, BLAINE, LYNDEN AND SUMAS WASHINGTON AS PROPOSED BY THE UNITED STATES CUSTOMS AND IMMIGRATIONS DEPARTMENTS WHEREAS, Whatcom County has a long tradition of open trade between the United States and Canada, and WHEREAS, there is substantial economic and security functions performed by the U. S. Customs and Immigrations operations at the border crossings, and WHEREAS, the Whatcom County Government is responsible for much of the security problems created by the border crossings, and WHEREAS, the ports in Whatcom County have been erroneously identified as "low volume, low- risk" ports when in fact the four ports are very high volume and truly serving a metropolitain type traffic with Blaine alone being the second to third busiest port in the U. S. with over Six and one -half (6 and 1/2) million crossings in 1982, and WHEREAS, any curtailment of operating hours or closure of any of these crossings, as is by Federal Government, would exacerbate the problems faced by Whatcom County as well as economic hardship on citizens and businesse County, or personnel, being proposed law enforcement create a severe s within Whatcom NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Whatcom County Council vigorously opposes the closure of any of the four (4) border cross in Whatcom County and expresses its grave concern on any plan to reduce operating hours or personnel without ful mitigation of the impact of such reductions regarding security of persons and the economic impact of such actions. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Whatcom County Council does hereby request the co- operation and assistance of all affected government and private entities to protest these proposed actions.
