RESOLUTION NO. 83 -10
A RESOLUTION IN THE MATTER OF THE ADOPTION OF A POLICY FOR
WHATCOM COUNTY EMPLOYEES PROHIBITING SEXUAL HARASSMENT IN
THE WORKPLACE
WHEREAS, it is the policy of the County to provide equal employment and
advancement opportunities for every. employee and to maintain a working en-
vironment which provides fair and equitable treatment of all employees, and
WHEREAS, harassment of employees, on the basis of sex is contrary to
County policy and is a violation of state and federal law,
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the County hereby adopts the following
POLICY STATEMENT ON SEXUAL HARASSMENT:
1.) That unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and
other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature constitute
sexual harassment when:
a.) submission to such conduct is made either explicitly or
implicitly a term or condition of an individual's employment;
b.) submission to or rejection of such conduct by an individual
is used as the basis for employment decisions affecting such
individual, or;
c.) such conduct has the purpose or effect of interfering with
an individual's work performance or creating an intimidating,
hostile or offensive working environment.
2.) That an employee who thinks he /she is being subjected to such
sexual harassment is encouraged to take the following actions:
a.) make it plain to the offender that the behavior will not be
tolerated;
b,) report the incident(s) to the offender's or the employee's
supervisor, or;

c.) report the incident(s) to the appropriate department
head or to the Personnel Department.
3.) That supervisors who receive complaints or become aware of
such incidents will:
a.) take action to insure the behavior is not repeated;
b.) notify the appropriate department head if the employee
concurs, and;
c.) notify the Personnel Department if the employee
concurs.
4.) That each reported incident will be investigated and,
appropriate action taken in accordance with the employee's
wishes and Personnel Department procedures.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that all departments of the County shall
acquaint their employees with the provisions of this resolution.
