HomeMy WebLinkAboutres1984-0341 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 30 31 32 DATE: October 4, 1984 INTRODUCED BY: PROPOSED BY: RESOLUTION NO. 84 -34 A RESOLUTION ASSISTING PROPERTY OWNERS IN ESTABLISHING THEIR PROPERTY UNDER THE OPEN SPACE ACT, CHAPTER 84.34 RCW WHEREAS, the heritage of Whatcom County is deeply rooted in the family farm; and, WHEREAS, farming in Whatcom County is essential to the local economy, provides food for people across the nation, and foste ibng cherished way of life; and, WHEREAS, farming provides open space and an aesthetically pleasing environment for all residents of the County; and, WHEREAS, the policies and the goals of the Comprehensive Plan reflect a strong policy of encouraging agricultural and pre- serving farm land; and, WHEREAS, Whatcom County concurs and adopts the 1979 findings-of the State Legislature found in RCW 84.34.300 which states that: That farming and the related agricultural industry have historically been and airrently are central factors in the economic and social lifeblood of the state; that it is a fundamental policy of the state to protect agriculural lands as a major natural resource in order to maintain a source to supply a wide range of agricultural products; and that the public interest in protection and stimulation of farming and agricultural industry is a basic element of enhancing the economic viability of this state. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVEd BY THE COUNCIL OF WHATCOM COUNTY that it is hereby declared the policy of Whatcom County to support and encourage the private, individual initiative of farmers who elect to preserve their farm land through donation of a con- servation easement on any productive parcel meeting the qualifying definition for open space taxation contained in RCW 84.34.020(2).
