6 RESOLUTION NO. 85 -29
7 A RESOLUTION IMPLEMENTING THE PROVISIONS OF
AN ORDINANCE ENTITLED "SHALL WHATCOM COUNTY
8 BE DECLARED A NUCLEAR FREE ZONE AND PENALTIES
ESTABLISHED FOR VIOLATION THEREOF ?"

11 WHEREAS, the voters declared Whatcom County a Nuclear Free
12 Zone by the passage of the above referenced ordinance on November
13 6, 1984 by a sixty -five percent (658) majority; and
14 WHEREAS, Section 4 of the ordinance directs officials of
15 Whatcom County to take all necessary steps to make the policies
16 of the ordinance effective; and
17 WHEREAS, the Chairperson of Citizens for a Nuclear Free
18 Whatcom County has petitioned the Council to take certain steps
19 to implement the ordinance,
20 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Whatcom County Council:
21 1. That the County Executive is requested to cause to have
22 erected signs at all major ports of entry to Whatcom County
23 stating the following:
24 "Welcome to Whatcom County
25 A Nuclear Free Zone by public vote on
26 November 6, 1984"
27 2. That, in the future, the official land use and planning
28 documents and maps of Whatcom County shall contain the endorse -
29 ment "Whatcom County is a nuclear free zone by public vote on
30 November 6, 1984."

3. That no County resources shall be used to aid, directly

or indirectly, in the manufacture, siting, or testing of nuclear

weapons.
