Johnson RESOLUTION N0. 85 -23 A RESOLUTION DECLARING THE MONTH OF MAY 1985 AS OLDER AMERICANS MONTH AND URGING ALL WHATCOM COUNTY CITIZENS TO PARTICIPATE IN THE OBSERVANCE WHEREAS, our older Americans are one of our greatest resources, and over the span of their lives have and continue to make significant contributions to the greatness of this county, this state, and our nation; and WHEREAS, the majority of older Americans exhibit the full range of characteristics of the population as the whole, and are healthy, independent, and leading rewarding lives; and WHEREAS, even in this great country where our older population is the wealthiest, best fed, best housed, most self - reliant older population in our history, there are significant numbers of older persons who experience a diminished ability to function independently due to poor health, poverty, and other barriers to self - sufficiency; WHEREAS, we must make every effort to ensure the continuance of opportunities for all older Americans to live productive and meaningful lives as long as possible; and WHEREAS, we must all join together to help dispel, where it exists, loneliness and hopelessness among our older citizens and assist with the care they need, so their final years may be lived in dignity and independence and as well give honor, gratitute, and praise for their achievements. NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, THAT THE WHATCOM COUNTY COUNCIL, declares the month of May as Older Americans Month in Whatcom County and urges all citizens to participate in the observance.
