PROPOSED BY C.J. Johnson
RESOLUTION N0. 85 -23
A RESOLUTION DECLARING THE MONTH OF MAY 1985 AS OLDER AMERICANS
MONTH AND URGING ALL WHATCOM COUNTY CITIZENS TO PARTICIPATE IN THE
OBSERVANCE
WHEREAS, our older Americans are one of our greatest resources, and over
the span of their lives have and continue to make significant contributions to
the greatness of this county, this state, and our nation; and
WHEREAS, the majority of older Americans exhibit the full range of
characteristics of the population as the whole, and are healthy, independent,
and leading rewarding lives; and
WHEREAS, even in this great country where our older population is the
wealthiest, best fed, best housed, most self - reliant older population in our
history, there are significant numbers of older persons who experience a
diminished ability to function independently due to poor health, poverty, and
other barriers to self - sufficiency;
WHEREAS, we must make every effort to ensure the continuance of
opportunities for all older Americans to live productive and meaningful lives as
long as possible; and
WHEREAS, we must all join together to help dispel, where it exists,
loneliness and hopelessness among our older citizens and assist with the care
they need, so their final years may be lived in dignity and independence and as
well give honor, gratitute, and praise for their achievements.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, THAT THE WHATCOM COUNTY COUNCIL, declares
the month of May as Older Americans Month in Whatcom County and urges all
citizens to participate in the observance.
PASSED this 2nd day of May , 1985.
