HomeMy WebLinkAboutres1988-052rail -res INTRODUCED BY: Jackson PROPOSED BY: Jackson DATE: October 6. 1988 RESOLUTION NO. 88 -52 IN SUPPORT OF THE RAIL DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION, RECOMMENDING PASSENGER SERVICE BE RE- ESTABLISHED BETWEEN SEATTLE, WASHINGTON AND VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA WHEREAS, the Rail Development Commission was created by the 1987 State Legislature to examine Washington State policy for freight rail and passenger rail service; and WHEREAS, the Commission will present its final report to the Legislature in December, 1988; and WHEREAS, the Commission's preliminary draft report recommends that the State, in conjunction with local Jurisdictions, should pursue resumption of Amtrak service from Seattle to Vancouver, B.C. via Everett, Mount Vernon, and Bellingham; and WHEREAS, the Commission is conducting public hearings on its recommendations; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Whatcom County Council that it is in the best.interests of Whatcom County to support re- establishing Amtrak service as recommended by the Rail Development Commission in their preliminary draft report, with the addition of Blaine to the list of cities along the Amtrak route; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Rail Development Commission should adopt said recommendation in its final report to the Washington State Legislature, and Whatcom County pledges its support to implement this recommendation.
