HomeMy WebLinkAboutres1989-100INTRODUCED BY Consent PROPOSED BY County Executive DATE 11 -16 -89 RESOLUTION NO. 89 -100 A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE CITIZEN VOLUNTEERS AND COUNTY AND STATE EMPLOYEES AND AGENCIES FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE IN THE RECENT FLOOD EMERGENCY IN WHATCOM COUNTY. WHEREAS, Whatcom County received approximately 4.3 inches of rain from November 9 through November 13, 1989, causing flooding throughout the unincorporated areas of Whatcom County and the cities of Everson, Sumas and Ferndale, and WHEREAS, the flood waters did breach the Nooksack River and cause several breaks in the levees and dikes causing flooding of farm and residential land, and WHEREAS, the County Executive declared that an emergency did exist and immediately ordered that the necessary procedures be placed in motion for all County departments to proceed with protective measures necessary for the public safety and welfare of the citizens and property of Whatcom County, and WHEREAS, citizen volunteers, County and State departments and agencies worked diligently throughout the five days to protect life and minimize property damage, NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, the Whatcom County Council does hereby commend all the County departments, State and Federal agencies, other relief agencies and citizen volunteers that participated during the recent flood emergency for their outstanding work in the. protection of life and property. Among these, but not limited to them, are the Department of Emergency Services, the Department of Public Works (Maintenance & Operations, Engineering and ER &R), the Sheriff's Department, the Corps of Engineers, the Salvation Army, the American Red Cross, officials in the cities of Sumas, Everson and Ferndale, and the numerous citizens who worked throughout the night sandbagging various breaks in the levee on the Nooksack River, its tributaries and creeks.
