IN APPRECIATION OF THE ASSISTANCE PROVIDED
DURING THE RECENT HEPATITIS A HEALTH EMERGENCY
BY HAGGEN INCORPORATED
WHEREAS, during the recent community crisis caused by the widespread
threat of Hepatitis A, Haggen Incorporated openly admitted its responsibility
for this situation; and
WHEREAS, the management and staff of Haggen Incorporated went beyond
their legal responsibility in purchasing and providing medical supplies such
as vaccine, band -aids, scales, garbage cans, syringes, and swabs, covering
about 95 percent of the cost to inoculate the more than 21,000 people who had
consumed possibly- tainted produce from Haggen; and
WHEREAS, while people stood in lines waiting for shots, Haggen
distributed more than 40,000 cookies, free soda pop, and hired entertainment
to make the situation for affected citizens as bearable as possible; and
WHEREAS, Haggen helped out in many other ways such as providing meals
for workers at the five local Health Department clinics, and transporting Army
National Guard and Army Reserve units from Seattle to help with the situation;
and
WHEREAS, Haggen is voluntarily offering reimbursement for shots
administered outside of Whatcom County, and the Whatcom County Health
Department estimates the total expenses incurred by Haggen Incorporated range
between $150,000 and $200,000;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Whatcom County Council extends
its appreciation -to Haggen Incorporated for its assistance in this venture,
and for its demonstration of community spirit and concern for its customers.
