HomeMy WebLinkAboutres1989-063utc.res N INTRODUCED BY: Emily Jackson PROPOSED BY: Emily Jackson DATE: July 6. 1989 1 RESOLUTION NO. 89 -63 2 ENDORSING THE CONTINUED STUDY OF EXTENDED AREA 3 SERVICE FOR WHATCOM COUNTY PHONE CUSTOMERS 4 WHEREAS, Whatcom County residents are served by three separate phone 5 companies, which creates increased costs for phone service and inconvenience 6 to residents who must make phone contacts between Point Roberts, Bellingham, 7 and the remainder of Whatcom County; and 8 WHEREAS, the needs and convenience of Whatcom County citizens should be 9 the first priority in area phone service; and 10 WHEREAS, the Courthouse is located within Bellingham, so that in order 11 for about half the citizens of the County to access government agencies by 12 phone a toll call must be made or the citizens must attempt to gain access to 13 one of a few toll —free county lines, which are not available for all 14 departments; and 15 WHEREAS, Point Roberts residents must pay for a toil call even to access 16 the county lines, yet calls are free to Whidbey Island, a location in which 17 Point Roberts has no community interest; and .; WHEREAS, the current service arrangement causes considerable expense for 19 businesses, both large and small, that often pay to have both city and county 20 lines, and must advertise in several yellow pages in order to ensure full 21 coverage in the county; 22 23 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Whatcom County Council that the 24 state Utilities and Transportation Commission is asked to adopt the extended 25 area service system as a method of determining the service needs of the 26 community; and 27 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council encourages the UTC to pursue 28 extended area servlce as an option for Whatcom County residents, who would 29 benefit greatly from a more equitable division of services. 30 APPROVED this 6th day of July, 1989. 31 C;j HATCOM COUNTY NCIL 32 ATTEST: C OM COUN , HIN % 33 34 Ram a Reeves, Counci Jerk onald G. ans , C airman
