Yes /INol/ SUMMARY STATEMENT.• At the November 27, 1990 Council meeting, Council Member Dennis Vander Yacht said he would like the Council to issue a resolution that would indicate the Council's willingness to examine measures that would help alleviate or prevent future flooding of the magnitude experienced recently by Whatcom County residents. This resolution attempts to convey that message. It is possible the resolution could be amended, depending on the results of a meeting with flood victims, scheduled for Thursday, November 29. Ordinance or Resolution Number. • RES90 -84 nooxmcx-� 12/10/90 SPONSORED BY: Vander Yacht /Laidlaw AMENDED PROPOSED BY: Vander Yacht INTRODUCTION DATE: 12 -4 -90 1 RESOLUTION NO. 90-84 2 ISSUING A STATEMENT OF SUPPORT FOR EFFORTS TO 3 MANAGE THE NOOKSACK RIVER IN ORDER TO 4 DIMINISH THE POSSIBILITY OF FUTURE CATASTROPHIC FLOODING 5 WHEREAS, Whatcom County has suffered major flooding during the past few weeks 6 due to several factors, among them the inability to contain the Nooksack River within its 7 banks; and 8 WHEREAS, the resulting loss of or damage to property, roads, livestock and 9 farmland could have a devastating effect on the citizens of Whatcom County for years to 10 come, either as victims of the flood or as taxpayers; and 11 WHEREAS, although part of the flooding resulted from unusual weather patterns, 12 part was due to the amount of gravel and silt accumulated in the river bottom; and 13 WHEREAS, it is in the best interest of Whatcom County citizens' health, safety and 14 welfare to seek a solution to this problem and avoid similar flooding incidents in the future; 15 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Whatcom County Council that it 16 is the intent of the Council to examine whatever measures are brought forth and shown to 17 be necessary, feasible and within its power in an effort to seek a solution to catastrophic 18 flooding of the Nooksack River. 19 APPROVED this 4th day of 2ecembg4990 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 ATTEST: Ramona Reeves, Council Clerk APPROVED AS TO FORM: Randall Watts, Chief Civil Deputy Prosecuting Atty.
