SUMMARY STATEMENT: The State Department of Ecology has funds available to help local
governments in the development of local wetlands protection programs. Whatcom County has
been offered $35,000 to help in its development of the required ordinance.
RECOMMENDED ACTION: Adopt the proposed resolution authorizing the administration to
apply for funds.

INTRODUCTION DATE:
A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE ADMINISTRATION TO ACCEPT
FUNDS FOR DEVELOPMENT OF WETLANDS REGULATIONS AS
PART OF A CRITICAL AREAS ORDINANCE
WHEREAS, the Council has directed the administration to pursue a sensitive areas ordinance including
wetlands; and
WHEREAS, the Growth Management Act also requires critical areas regulations, with wetlands as a major
component; and
WHEREAS, the State Department of Ecology has funds available to help local governments in the
development of local wetlands protection programs; and
WHEREAS, the County has been offered a grant from the State Department of Ecology in the amount of
$35,000 to help Whatcom County in its development of a critical areas ordinance addressing wetlands protection
for Whatcom County.
NbW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE WHATCOM COUNTY COUNCIL:
The Council hereby authorizes the administration to accept State Department of Ecology Wetland Protection Grant
Program funds for the purpose of developing a critical areas ordinance addressing wetlands protection for
Whatcom County.
