Al Swift and other members of the state`s Congressional delegation to get more staffing at the border crossings in Whatcom County. Ordinance or Resolution Number. • R 90 -15 border.res INTRODUCED BY: Consent PROPOSED BY: Hansey DATE: 3 -6 -90 RESOLUTION NO. 90 -15 ENDORSING EFFORTS TO INCREASE STAFF AT THE INTERNATIONAL PORTS OF ENTRY IN WHATCOM COUNTY WHEREAS, the relationship between Whatcom County and Canada is one of economic interdependence , friendship and cooperation; and WHEREAS, the number of people travelling between Whatcom County and British Columbia increased 27 percent between 1988 and 1989; and WHEREAS, the United States Customs Service and Immigration and Naturalization Service staff has not been increased at Whatcom County border crossings to keep pace with the traffic volume; and WHEREAS, both Canadian and American citizens are greatly inconvenienced by traffic tie -ups at the border; and WHEREAS, it would be in the best interest of Whatcom County in general and its border communities in particular to alleviate traffic jams created at the international ports of entry; and WHEREAS, Congressman Al Swift and other members of Washington's Congressional Delegation are working to increase the size of the Customs and Immigration offices at the Washington State border crossings; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Whatcom County Council that the efforts of Congressman Swift and other members of the state's Congressional Delegation to secure additional staffing of the international border crossings in Washington are hereby endorsed and encouraged; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this resolution be immediately sent by Council staff to Congressman Swift and other members of the state Congressional Delegation.
