SUMMARY STATEMENT.
Council Members are prohibited by law from raising-their own salaries during their term of office. By
setting the salary schedule for Council Members several years in advance, a conflict is avoided.

1 RESOLUTION NO. 91 -045
2 ADOPTING A SALARY SCHEDULE FOR THE
3 WHATCOM COUNTY COUNCIL
4 WHEREAS, it is necessary to establish the salaries of the Whatcom County Council
5 and to update the salary schedule adopted in November of 1989 in Resolution 896; and
6 WHEREAS; the Whatcom County Charter prohibits any Council Member from
7 receiving a salary in excess of 15 percent of the County Executive's salary; and
8 WHEREAS, the 35th and 54th amendments to the Constitution of the State of
9 Washington prevent County Council Members from receiving any pay increase during a term
10 in office;
11 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Whatcom County Council that
12 pursuant to the authority contained in Chapter 88 Section 2 Laws of the State of
13 Washington, 1st Extra session, the compensation to be paid to the office- of . Whatcom
14 County Council Members, as established in Resolution 89 -96, shall be changed as indicated:
15 1992 - $11,000 per year per Council Member
16 1993 - $12,000 per year per Council Member
17 1994 - $12,500 per year per Council Member

19 The salary paid to Council Members shall not exceed 15 percent of the Executive's
20 salary in any given year, notwithstanding the approval of this resolution.
