Yes / IN 61.3;1_1 SUMMARY STATEMENT.• Mark Challender, Executive Director of the Council of Governments, requests that the Council and the Executive jointly proclaim May 16, 1991 as "Alternative Transportation Day" in Whatcom County. The event is scheduled to coincide with National Transportation Week, May 13 through 17, and is part of the Council of Governments' Urban Transportation Planning Effort. The resolution encourages County employees and officials to participate by using alternative modes of transportation on May 16 in order to help protect clean air, reduce traffic congestion and conserve fuel. ORIGINATOR'S RECOMMENDED ACTION.• Council of Governments requests the resolution be passed and signed by both Council and Executive. COMMITTEE ACTION (including dates): COUNCIL ACTION (including dates): 4/23/91: Council approved Related File Numbers: Ordinance or Resolution Number. • RES91 -024 auco.res 4/10/91 SPONSORED BY: Consent PROPOSED BY: Council of Govts INTRODUCTION DATE: 4/10,191 1 RESOLUTION NO. 91 -024 2 PROCLAIMING MAY 16, 1991 "ALTERNATIVE TRANSPORTATION DAY" 3 4 WHEREAS, the Whatcom County Council of Governments is sponsoring 5 alternative Transportation Day on May 16, 1991 as part of its Urban Transportation 6 Planning effort and to coincide with National Transportation Week (May 13 -17); and 7 8 WHEREAS, in commemoration of Alternative Transportation Day, the Whatcom 9 County Council of Governments is encouraging citizens to use modes of transportation 10 which conserve fuel, help keep our air clean, and reduce traffic congestion; and 11 12 WHEREAS, Whatcom County government would like to encourage its employees 13 and officials to participate whole - heartedly in this effort; 14 15 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Whatcom County Council 16 and the Whatcom County Executive jointly proclaim May 16, 1991 as Alternative 17 Transportation Day for Whatcom County; and 18 ,9 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Whatcom County employees and officials 20 are hereby encouraged to participate in Alternative Transportation Day by using modes 21 of transportation such as walking, taking the bus, car - pooling, and riding bicycles, in 22 order to help protect clean air, reduce traffic congestion, and conserve fuel. 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 30 31 32 33 34 35 36 37 ADOPTED this 2 -ira day of r; i , 1991.
