Mount Baker High School was recognized as the top waste reduction and recyling school program in the entire
State from a field of 62 contenders. This resolution gives appropriate recognition at the local level for the
school's leadership in the field of waste reduction and recycling.

RESOLUTION NO. 92 -052
A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING MOUNT BAKER HIGH SCHOOL'S
AWARD FROM THE WASHINGTON STATE DEPARTMENT OF
ECOLOGY FOR WASTE REDUCTION AND RECYCLING PROGRAMS
WHEREAS, Whatcom County has targeted waste reduction and recycling as its highest
priority for managing waste in the County; and,
WHEREAS, Mount Baker High School has developed and is demonstrating impressive waste
reduction and recycling programs that include recycling of tin, plastic, metal, oil, and paper
as well as composting of food and kitchen waste; and,
WHEREAS, students at Mount Baker High School receive enhanced learning opportunities
by assisting with and participating in the waste reduction and recycling programs, especially
the unique, computerized composting project; and,
WHEREAS, the Mount Baker High School program was recognized as the top waste
reduction and recycling school program in the state from among a field of 62 contenders by
the State Department of Ecology; and,
WHEREAS, the Mount Baker School District has encouraged and developed recycling
opportunities at most district schools;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Whatcom County Council as follows:
1. Mount Baker High School and the Mount Baker School District be commended for
waste reduction and recycling efforts that earned the high school statewide recognition and
a $5,000 award from the Washington State Department of Ecology.

2. Mount Baker School District administrators, employees, and students be encouraged
to continue and support the exemplary programs already underway in the district.
