9 administration and the Council;
10 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Whatcom County Council that the
11 following credo shall be adopted, and shall be conveyed to all current and future employees
2 of Whatcom County:
13 Credo of the Government of Whatcom County
14 We believe our first responsibility is to the citizens we serve. In meeting their needs,
15 everything we do must be of high quality. Whatcom County should be a leader in serving
16 our citizens, promoting their welfare, respecting their cultural diversity, and enhancing our
17 community through innovative, courteous, accurate and prompt service.
18 We believe in careful use of taxpayer money. We must constantly strive to reduce our costs
19 in order to maintain high levels of efficient service. We will experiment with new ideas and
20 develop innovative programs, yet ensure that all expenditures are made with the goal of
21 efficiency and value.
22 We believe we are responsible to future citizens, as planners and custodians of the county.
23 We must consider the impact of our actions on the economic, social, environmental and
24 spiritual welfare of the community not only within the next five years, but within the next
25 fifty and one hundred years.
26 We believe in the integrity and professionalism of all employees in county government.
27 Everyone has something useful to contribute and must be treated with respect and dignity.

1 We will work to provide job security, fair and adequate compensation, along with clean and
2 safe working conditions. We will foster a climate of openness and trust that encourages
3 suggestions and complaints. We will provide equal opportunity for employment,
4 development and advancement for those qualified.
5 We believe in maintaining an ethical work place. We will not taint our judgment by
6 nepotism, or by acceptance of gratuities. We will not convert public property to our own use.
7 We will not use confidential information for personal gain. We will not do anything in the
8 line of duty that is morally, ethically or legally wrong. When improper situations appear,
9 we will report them immediately.
10 We believe in continuous renewal, in following our visions into the future. We recognize
11 that traditions give us continuity and strength, but some no longer serve our needs. We
12 must have the courage to act on that recognition, anticipate change, shape it to our purpose,
13 and act as agents of change for the welfare of our community.
