3 PROCLAIMING APRIL 3- 9,1994 AS PUBLIC HEALTH WEEK

6 WHEREAS, individuals and communities should be empowered to take greater
7 responsibility for their own health by minimizing known unhealthy behaviors, taking
8 appropriate preventive measures, and making informed, cost - effective choices about the
9 use of appropriate and effective health services; and
10
11 WHEREAS, it is well recognized that public health represents society's best effort
12 to improve access to proven, cost - effective and preventive health services; and.
13
14 WHEREAS, the major improvements in health status during this century have
15 been a result of population -based public health programs such as safe drinking water and
16 food supplies, reduction of smoking, promotion of oral health, immunizations, family
17 planning, sewage disposal, and infectious disease control; and
18
19 WHEREAS, the health of all Whatcom County residents depends upon the
20 availability of adequate health education, protection and promotion; and
21
22 WHEREAS, continued improvement in health for all people of Washington will
23 require stronger relationships and common cause among diverse professional and citizens
24 groups pursuing interests with health implications; and
25
26 WHEREAS, the American Association for World Health has proclaimed 1994 the
27 Year of Oral Health; all people living in Whatcom County are encouraged to place more
28 emphasis on oral health as an integral part of total health;
29
30 NOW, THEREFORE, the Whatcom County Council does hereby proclaim the
31 week of April 3 -9, 1994, as Public Health Week.
