The Kitsap County Board of Commissioners has asked the Whatcom County Council to approve a resolution
of support as they work toward establishing permanent moorage for the U.S.S. Missouri in the county's naval
yard in Bremerton. Kitsap County must submit a proposal packet to the U.S. Navy no later than
November 1. The Department of Navy is expected to make a final decision on this matter by February 1, 1996.
This project is extremely important to the Kitsap County community and the support of Whatcom County would
be greatly appreciated.

3 SUPPORTING THE MOORAGE OF THE
4 U.S.S MISSOURI AT BREMERTON
5 WHEREAS, Puget Sound is rich in the history of the United States Navy, from the
6 earliest days of regional exploration to today's strong strategic presence; and
7 WHEREAS, the battleship U.S.S. Missouri has served with distinction in three of our
8 nation's wars, including the Second World War, and the Korean and Gulf Conflicts; and
9 WHEREAS, the instruments implementing the formal surrender of the Japanese
10 Empire, concluding the Pacific War and ending the Second World War were signed aboard the
11 U.S.S. Missouri in Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945; and
12 WHEREAS, during most of the past 30 years the battleship U.S.S. Missouri has been
13 moored at the Puget Sound Navel, Shipyard in Bremerton, thereby allowing many thousands
14 of visitors from all over our nation and world to tour this proud battleship and appreciate the
15 history and sacrifice of armed forces of our country; and
16 WHEREAS, the traditional presence of the battleship U.S.S. Missouri at Bremerton has
17 engendered strong historic, emotional, and economic ties for the citizens of our state.
18 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Whatcom County Council supports
19 the continued and permanent moorage of the battleship U.S.S. Missouri at Bremerton,
20 Washington and petitions the Washington Congressional delegation to support this effort.
