SUBJECT: Speed Limit on E. Smith Road
The E. Smith Road has been entirely reconstructed, including widening with paved shoulders. We
have reviewed the speed limit on the E. Smith Road and conducted the necessary Engineering
Study to accurately reflect the safe and proper speed. We accordingly recommend adoption of this
Ordinance that will increase the speed limit on the E. Smith Road between the Hannegan and Noon
Roads from 45 -mph to 50 -mph. Adoption of this Ordinace will then provide a uniform 50 -mph
speed limit on the E. Smith Road all the way from the Hannegan Road to the Mt. Baker Highway
(SR 542).

3 AN ORDINANCE REGARDING ESTABLISHING THE SPEED LIMIT
4 ON EAST SMITH ROAD

6 WHEREAS, the Whatcom County council is authorized under RCW 46.61.415 to
7 establish speed limits on certain County roads; and
8
9 WHEREAS, an engineering study was conducted by the County Engineer's
10 office;

12 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED by the Whatcom County Council that the
13 speed limit be established as follows:

16 45 14141 on East gntith Read 50 MPH on East Smith Road from Hannegan Road to
17 Noon Road, for a total length of 2.02 miles. Located within Sections 27, 28, 33 and 34,
18 Township 39 North, Range 3 East, W.M.

21 BE IT FURTHER ORDAINED that the County Engineer is hereby directed to install
22 the appropriate signs and that the Whatcom County Sheriff and the Washington State Patrol be
23 notified by a copy of this ordinance.

25 Provisions of this ordinance are hereby added to Whatcom County Code, Section
26 10.04.080, and hereby amend Whatcom County Code, Section 10.04.070.
