RESOLUTION NO. 99 -059
RESOLUTION ENDORSING AND SUPPORTING THE
ACTION PLAN OF THE FARM FUTURES TASK FORCE
WHEREAS, agriculture literally feeds this great nation and the world; and
WHEREAS, Whatcom County has a rich history of agricultural productivity; and
WHEREAS, agriculture and agricultural lands are encountering increasing economic
and other challenges and pressures driving many farmers from the soil and converting vast
areas of farmland to other uses; and
WHEREAS, on April 30, 1999, in an effort to ascertain the nature and extent of the
obstacles facing agriculture and to identify community -based actions or policies which
might assist in the preservation of agriculture as a viable presence, Whatcom County
Executive Pete Kremen designated a Farm Futures Task Force to address these issues
and develop a workable action plan to implement the findings and recommendations of the
Task Force; and
WHEREAS, the Farm Futures Task Force has prepared and presented its Action
Plan dated October 14, 1999, identifying goals, specifying objectives,. determining
necessary action, establishing timeliness, assigning responsibility and formulating methods
of assessment to increase the economic viability of farming in Whatcom County; and
WHEREAS, the Whatcom County Council applauds the work of the Farm Futures
Task Force and desires to proclaim to all its endorsement of agriculture and agricultural
pursuits in Whatcom County.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Whatcom County Council
unanimously declares its support and endorsement of the Action Plan prepared by the
Farm Futures Task Force.
