(Y/N Requested Date: Resolution opposing Initiative 696 RECOMMENDED MOTION (for final action): COUNCIL ACTION TAKEN. 1999 - 388 10/12/99: Amended and approved 7 -0, Res. #99 -049 Related File Numbers: Ordinance or Resolution Number (this item only): . *4qRESC1 _0 1 Initiative 696 res.doc 2 SPONSORED BY: COUNCIL 3 PROPOSED BY: COUNCIL 4 INTRODUCTION DATE: 10/12/99 5 6 7 RESOLUTION NO. 99 -049 8 9 OPPOSING INITIATIVE 696 10 11 WHEREAS., the commercial fishing industry is important to the economy of 12 Whatcom County and the State of Washington; and 13 14 WHEREAS, net fishing is an important part of the commercial fishing 15 industry; and 16 17 WHEREAS, the role of the Whatcom County Council is to create and maintain 18 public policy to promote the well -being of Whatcom County; and 19 20 WHEREAS, Initiative 696 proposes a ban on all net fishing, with the exception 21 of that used by the bait fishermen. 22 23 WHEREAS, no salmon would be saved by Initiative 696, due to the foregone 24 opportunity clause. 25 26 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by. the Whatcom County Council that, 27 while we realize the existence of a salmon crisis, we do not believe the solution to 28 be the elimination of an important segment of the industry; and 29 30 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Whatcom County Council opposes 31 Initiative 696. 32 33 34 Approved this 12th day of October , 1999. 35 36 37 ATTEST: WHATCOM COUNTY COUNCIL 38 WHATCOM COUNTY, WASHINGTON 39 40 41 Dana Brown- Davis, Clerk of the Council Marlene Dawson, Council Chair 42 43 A;7�\.
