9 OPPOSING INITIATIVE 696

11 WHEREAS., the commercial fishing industry is important to the economy of
12 Whatcom County and the State of Washington; and
13
14 WHEREAS, net fishing is an important part of the commercial fishing
15 industry; and
16
17 WHEREAS, the role of the Whatcom County Council is to create and maintain
18 public policy to promote the well -being of Whatcom County; and
19
20 WHEREAS, Initiative 696 proposes a ban on all net fishing, with the exception
21 of that used by the bait fishermen.

23 WHEREAS, no salmon would be saved by Initiative 696, due to the foregone
24 opportunity clause.

26 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by. the Whatcom County Council that,
27 while we realize the existence of a salmon crisis, we do not believe the solution to
28 be the elimination of an important segment of the industry; and
29
30 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Whatcom County Council opposes
31 Initiative 696.
