INTRODUCED: January 12. 1999
WHEREAS, on January 22 °d in 1855, the Point Elliot Treaty between the United States of
America and numerous Puget Sound and Coastal Salish Tribes was signed, and;
WHEREAS, the Point Elliot Treaty established the present government to government
relationship on the one hand between the United States, the State of Washington, and Whatcom
County with both the Lummi Nation and the Nooksack Tribe, and;
WHEREAS, the citizens of Whatcom County, including our school children, should all
become aware of this pivotal historic event, the events which preceded it, and those that have
unfolded from it to so change the course of history in the Pacific Northwest, and;
WHEREAS, we should always promote better understanding and appreciation of the
diversity of cultures and communities residing within Whatcom County,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Whatcom County Council that January
22, 1999, the 144` anniversary of the signing of the Point Elliot Treaty of 1855, shall be proclaimed
"Treaty Day ".
