2 PROCLAIMING APRIL 1-7,1996 AS PUBLIC HEALTH WEEK
WHEREAS, individuals and communities should be empowered to take greater
responsibility for their own health by minimizing known unhealthy behaviors, taking
appropriate preventive measures, and making informed, cost - effective choices about the use
of appropriate and effective health services; and
WHEREAS, it is well recognized that public health represents society's best effort to
improve access to proven, cost - effective and preventive health services; and
WHEREAS, the major improvements in health status during this century have been
a result of population -based public health programs such as safe drinking water and food
supplies, reduction of smoking, promotion of oral health, immunizations, family planning,
sewage disposal, and infectious disease control; and
WHEREAS, the health of all Washingtonians depends upon the availability of
adequate health education, protection and promotion; and
WHEREAS, continued improvement in health for all people of Washington will
require stronger relationships and common cause among diverse professional and citizens
groups pursuing interests with health implications;
NOW, THEREFORE, the Whatcom County Council does hereby proclaim the week
of April 1 -7, 1996, as
Public Health Week
in Whatcom County, and urges all people to join in this celebration by seeking knowledge and
understanding of public health issues, thereby becoming advocates of their own, their families'
and their neighbors' health.
